Normally there would be a write up about the game etc. However, try as I might, its difficult to put into words as this was a real classic played between tow very good sides and although there was always the competitive edge it was played the right way throughout the 90 minutes.
I know its an easy thing to say but this really was how veterans football should be played.
To make things even better on the night was the largest crowd we have ever had for a league cup final, which was good for the players and it was good to see all the mascots from both sides taking part in things - congratulations to both clubs for that.
As for things being done right, the evening had a slightly sombre feel as Styles took to the pitch owing to the loss of their club secretary and striker - Jamie Higgins, who died last July. Top marks to Concord Rangers for changing their colours to allow Styles to wear their Yellow kit with ' Striker Higgins' emblazoned across the back.
The Styles team has raced to a 3 - 0 half time lead with two goals from Man-of-the-Match Mark Waldron and A 45 yard thunderbolt from Phill Lush.
However, the second half saw Concord led by skipper Antony Jones enjoy more possession and forced the Styles team further back and not surprisingly a goal came for the Islanders in the 63rd minutes from Steve Knott. Just three minutes later John Slater scored a second and it was game on. As I said earlier it turned out to be a real classic and the football played was great entertainment for the large crowd. Concord looked to have equalised in the dying moments but the ball didn'y quite carry over the line and much to the relief of Styles the final whistle came.
Say what you like about football but I tell you what, these two did the league proud and for me they did the memory of a nice guy proud at the same time.
They cup, which was yet another new trophy - The Barbara Dawson Cup - was presented by Barbara after the game.
