SOUTHEND MAYOR - Cllr. ALAN CRYSTALL IS DELIGHTED WITH THE PROGRESS OF THE LEAGUE I was delighted to have been invited by Southend’s Mayor to the splendid settings of Porters, the 15th century house, now the Mayor’s Parlour (civic house). Together with the Evening Echo Sports Editor, Paul Alton we sat and discussed how the League had developed from humble beginnings to the present day - five divisions of 50 teams. The Mayor was amazed to learn that one of the largest Sunday Vet’s Leagues in the UK is right here in his own Town. " Its fantastic that the League has grown the way it has over the past 2 year, and I applaud your commitment" said The Mayor. He added, " I think care of older people is becoming more important and the Veterans’ League has an important part to play in their health". He was also pleased to take the opportunity to read the letter’s I had received from UEFA whom have taken an interest in our League, I have published UEFA President Mr. Lennart Johansson’s letter can be seen in the latest Vets News.
We talked about the possibility starting of an over 45’s or 50’s Division and the merit’s of keeping people playing. The Mayor was obviously keen on this idea and asked to be updated on future developments. He also asked that the Mayor’s Parlour be placed on the Vets News mailing list so that all future Mayor’s can see what is happening within the League. ……" please put the Mayor’s Parlour on your mailing list, so all future Mayor’s can see what’s happening with the League"…… He was very impressed with the launching of the League’s Official Website, which will give players nationwide the opportunity to read about the Southend Borough Combination Veterans League. He was impressed to learn that the website will have video facilities as well as all the usual items. The Mayor has been invited to the first Inter – League game of the season, which is scheduled to take place in late October. I was delighted that The Mayor took the time and trouble to meet with me and I am sure we will speak again in the future. The Mayor wishes the League all the best for the season and for its continuing development.
