This was the first of our 5 scheduled League Cup Finals at The Len Forge Centre, and the first since the ground changed its name to that of our founder and former Chairman.
It was also the inaugural game for the new cup the teams were competing for. The new cup was donated by one of the best football administrators I have worked with and a very good mate, CHRIS AVIS CUP, our League Registration Officer. Chris was delighted to make the post match presentations to the teams and officials.
Despite the fact there was an England game live on the box there was a decent crowd who turned out to watch this game. It was a very cold night and the players were only too please to get the game started after emerging from the dressing rooms!
The old saying that league tables don't lie soon became apparent after just 27 minutes when Baker volleyed home to give Division Two champions Brit the lead.
To their credit the Ekco players never stopped trying to push forward and go for goal but it was not to be and by half time they trailed by 4 - 0 after Baker had added his second and McGimpsey and a Clarke spot kick really put the game beyond the reach of the Ekco side.
The second half was just 10 minutes old when Cumming struck to extend the Brit lead. It was a devastating few minutes for Ekco and just a minute later Jenkins scored with Cumming scoring his second 3 minutes later to complete the rout.
I think everyone will agree that Ekco showed a tremendous spirt throughout and never once stopped or gave up as many others might considering the scoreline.
The game was played in a very competitive but sporting manner for the entire 90 minutes and the officials were rarely called into action.
Both sides wee a real credit to the league.
