Last week saw the Division Two teams compete for a new trophy and it was the same again for the Division Three Cup. The new trophy the sides competed for is the Sir Teddy Taylor Cup. We were delighted that Sir Teddy (our League President) was able to attend the game and to present the trophy.
The game started and ended at a good tempo and played in a good spirit throughout.
I think most of those watching would agree that it was a case of a well used footballing clique about a game of two halves, but it was. Ford Basildon enjoyed more possession and territorial advantage in the first half and were 2 - 0 up by the time half time arrived. The Ford strikers being Anthony Warner and Jason Neal. Wheatleys did have one or two decent chances but failed to make them count.
The second half saw the Wheatley side press harder and they enjoyed virtually the same amount of possession and territory as did Ford in the first half. They created some good scoring opportunities which, saw the Ford 'keeper' busier than his Wheatleys counterpart. Despite all their efforts they could not make the breakthrough and despite a late strike from Paul Neighbour it was a case of too little too late and the Cup went to Ford.
Both side still have it all to play for in the race for the Division Three title with Wheatleys having valuable games in hand so it promises to be a great end to the season for one of these fine clubs.
